Contabo VPS Setup Guide 2026: Secure Ubuntu Step by Step
A practical Contabo VPS setup checklist covering SSH keys, firewall, updates, users, backups, monitoring and WordPress readiness.
A new VPS is not production-ready. Before installing WordPress or an application, establish secure access, patching, firewall rules, backups and monitoring. This guide uses Ubuntu concepts; verify commands against your installed release.
Safety note: Keep the original console session open until the new sudo account and SSH key have been tested. A firewall or SSH mistake can lock you out.
1. Order the Right Region and Image
Choose the region closest to most visitors, select a supported Ubuntu LTS release and store the initial credentials in a password manager. Review our Contabo review before ordering.
2. Patch Before Installing Applications
Connect through SSH, update package indexes, install available security updates and reboot if the kernel changes. Confirm the operating system clock and timezone. Enable unattended security updates only after understanding how reboots will be handled.
3. Create an Administrator Account
Create a named user, grant only the required sudo privileges and add your public SSH key. Open a second terminal and verify key-based login. Once confirmed, disable password authentication and direct root SSH login. Never close the working session before the test succeeds.
4. Configure the Firewall
Use the provider firewall and an operating-system firewall for layered protection. Permit SSH from a trusted IP when practical, plus ports 80 and 443 for a public web server. Deny unused inbound services. Check that IPv6 rules match IPv4 rules.
5. Add Brute-Force and Application Protection
Install a rate-limiting or banning tool such as Fail2ban and review its logs. For WordPress, place a maintained WAF in front of the server, keep plugins minimal and protect the administrator route with strong authentication. Our WordPress security guide compares options.
6. Build Backups You Can Restore
Snapshots are useful but are not a complete backup strategy. Send encrypted backups to storage outside the Contabo account, define retention and perform a restore test. Back up application files, database dumps and the configuration required to rebuild the server.
7. Configure Monitoring
Monitor public uptime, disk consumption, memory pressure, CPU load, failed services and certificate expiry. Send alerts to a channel you actually check. Record a short incident procedure containing console access, backup location and rollback steps.
8. Install the Application Stack
Only now install a maintained web stack or control panel. Use supported PHP and database versions, automatic TLS certificates and separate database credentials. Avoid one-line installation scripts you have not audited.
Launch Checklist
- SSH key verified and root login disabled
- Firewall tested from outside the server
- Security updates applied
- Off-site backup restored successfully
- Uptime and resource alerts received
- TLS renewal tested
